Curriculum Statement

At Poulton Lancelyn we aim to provide a curriculum that is broad and balanced to reflect the needs of our children, providing a range of culturally diverse experiences to reflect the world they live in. We incorporate the statutory requirements for the National Curriculum 2014, with experiences that provide the children with the skills and knowledge to develop them as independent life-long learners. We challenge all learners to become independent and achieve academically as well as promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the children to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. The children are taught to understand their own community as part of a national and global society linked to the ‘Global Learning Programme’. We promote a ‘Growth Mindset’ approach which encourages them to learn from their mistakes and promote a love for learning and self-improvement, where they embrace challenge and develop emotional resilience.

We aspire to develop the children into Successful learners, Confident individuals and Responsible citizens through our curriculum learning opportunities.

In KS1 and KS2 the children are taught to the statutory guidance of the ‘National Curriculum 2014’ which informs our planning through a themed approach to ensure cross-curricular links. The curriculum consists of core and foundation subjects:

     English      Maths     Science

Art and Design, History, Geography, Music, PE, Computing, Design and Technology,

Foreign Languages (KS2)

Children in F2 are taught to the statutory framework for EYFS which covers the Prime areas (Personal Social Emotional Development (PSED), Communication and Language, Physical Development) and the Specific areas (Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World, Expressive Arts and Design). Through the EYFS environment our curriculum supports the children through the three characteristics of learning:- Playing and Exploring - Engagement, Active Learning – Motivation, and Creative & Thinking Critically – Thinking which takes place both indoors and outdoors.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is taught in F2 and Ks1. This teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

"The curriculum is of high quality. Pupils have many opportunities to study exciting and interesting topics which help them to learn well."  Ofsted 2015

"Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is promoted well throughout the curriculum." Ofsted 2015

‘‘The curriculum prepares pupils well for life in modern Britain. As a rights respecting school, there are a number of charters which promote British values well; pupils are expected to show mutual respect at all times around school and respect the rights of others, both pupils and adults alike. Pupils learn well about important British milestones such as Victory in Europe (VE) Day and the importance of the roles played by the monarchy and members of the royal family in society. These activities help them to understand their cultural roots well." Ofsted 2015
